William H. Brotherton papers, 1862-1908.

The collection consists of papers of William H. Brotherton from 1862-1908. The papers include letters, miscellaneous items, and a large scrapbook. The letters are dated between March 17, 1862 and August 3, 1866. Seven letters are from William H. Brotherton to his wife and father; 27 are from James M. Brotherton to his father; one is to James from his father (25 May 1863) before he was aware of James's death; one is from Dr. W.H. Deal of Chicago (who found James wounded on the battlefield) to Levi Brotherton. The scrapbook consists of newspaper clippings documenting the political career of William H. Brotherton. The deed is to a lot in Atlanta sold to E.L. Brotherton.

Levi Brotherton (October 8, 1810-November 22, 1893) was born in Greene County, East Tennessee and died in Atlanta, Georgia. His father, John T. Brotherton, moved to Blount County, Tennessee in 1824. Levi lived with his parents until 1833. In that year he received his license to exhort and went into the Cherokee Indian Nation. He remained there five years until the Indians were pushed westward. William H. Brotherton, Atlanta politician and city commissioner, was born 8 February 1839, near Benton, Polk County, Tennessee, and died 27 February 1908, in Atlanta, Georgia. He went into business in Tifton, Georgia (1858), but enlisted in the Confederate Army (Georgia Infantry, 39th Regiment) with his brother, James, in 1862.
